Lorenz J. Falling

B. Sc. in Chemistry, awarded at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. He went on to study Materials Science at Lund University in Sweden, where he obtained a M. Sc. in Physics. After that, he returned to Berlin, Germany, and worked in the Electronic Structure group at the Anorganic Chemistry department of the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) of the Max Planck Society. His project focused on operando studies of iridium (hydr-)oxide surfaces using soft X-ray spectroscopy at BESSY II. He finished his PhD project with summa cum laude at the end of 2020.

Current research interest:

  • Quantification of the solid liquid interface

  • electro- and gas phase catalysis, as in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and ethylene epoxidation on Ag

Experimental techniques:

  • (Operando) X-ray spectroscopy (XPS, NEXAFS, AES)

  • (Operando) X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS)

  • Electrochemical cells

  • Catalytic reactors (as well as TPR, TPO, TPD…)
